Description

Sikaflex-291i is an easy-to-apply 1-component polyurethane-based marine sealant specifically developed for the marine market. The compound cures when exposed to atmospheric moisture. Sikaflex-291i also meets the low flame spread requirements set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Application area

Sikaflex-291i is a versatile product designed for marine applications. It is suitable for elastic, vibration-absorbing joints, and can also be used for a wide range of interior marine applications. Sikaflex-291i has good adhesion to substrates commonly found in marine environments such as wood, metals, primed surfaces and coatings (2K systems), ceramic materials, and plastics (e.g. glass fiber reinforced polyester). Sikaflex-291i should not be used on plastics prone to stress cracking (e.g. PMMA, polycarbonate, etc.). This product should only be used by experienced professional users.

Application

Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, and dust. The pretreatment depends on the specific nature of the substrates and is important to ensure a durable bond. Suggestions for pretreatment can be found in the current edition of the Sika pretreatment chart. Please note that these suggestions are based on experience and must be verified by testing on the original substrate. Sikaflex-291i can be used between 10 °C and 40 °C, but differences in reactivity and application properties must be considered. The optimal temperature for materials and sealant is between 15 °C and 25 °C. Sikaflex-291i can be applied by hand, pneumatic, or electrically driven caulking gun with piston rod. Finishing of the joint must be done within the skin formation time of the sealant. We recommend using Sika Tooling Agent N.

Other smoothing products should be tested for suitability/compatibility before use. Uncured Sikaflex-291i can be removed from tools and equipment with Sika Remover-208 or another suitable solvent. Cured material can only be removed mechanically. Hands and skin soiled should be washed immediately with Sika Cleaner-350H cleaning wipes or another suitable industrial cleaner. Never use solvents on the skin! Sikaflex-291i can best be overpainted after skin formation. Overpainting can be improved by pretreating surfaces with Sika Aktivator-100 or Sika Aktivator-205 before the painting process. If the paint requires oven curing (> 80 °C), the best result is achieved if the sealant is fully cured first. All paint compatibility should be tested by pre-trials under production conditions. The elasticity of paints is usually lower than that of sealants, which can lead to cracking of the paint layer in the joint area.
