Nikwax Tech Wash & TX.Direct Wash-In in 2 x 300 ml is a complete kit for washing and re-impregnating sailing jackets, foul weather gear, shell trousers, gloves, and even synthetic sleeping bags. Tech Wash is a soap-based detergent that cleans effectively, removes dirt and residues from old detergents, and can reactivate the garment’s water repellency. When the original DWR coating starts to wear off – for example, when water no longer beads after washing – follow up with TX.Direct, which renews the water-repellent properties without affecting the material’s moisture transport. The result: you stay drier and more comfortable for longer, even in damp marine conditions.

The kit is recommended for sailing apparel with membranes from Musto (BR2, Gore-Tex), Helly Hansen (Helly Tech), GILL (XPLORE), and Typhoon (TX-3) – the most common materials in marine foul weather gear. Tech Wash works on both natural fibers like wool and cotton and on synthetics, while TX.Direct renews water repellency in synthetic garments.

How it works – and why it matters

Breathability in a rain or shell garment drops drastically when the outer fabric absorbs water. Tech Wash cleans without leaving water-absorbing residues like regular detergents do, which helps the garment’s existing DWR to function. TX.Direct leaves a flexible, water-repellent treatment on the fibers that allows water vapor to pass through, so the garment continues to “breathe.” Application is easy in the washing machine or by hand, and no tumble drying is required – saving energy and being gentle on older favorites.

Easy use onboard

Always wash first with Tech Wash. If the garment is relatively new, DWR can be reactivated just by washing; otherwise, impregnate directly after with TX.Direct Wash-In. Never use fabric softener when washing technical fabrics – softener leaves a coating that clogs the fibers and impairs moisture transport.

Environmental profile

All Nikwax products are water-based, climate neutral, biodegradable, flame retardant, not tested on animals, and completely free from fluorocarbons. TX.Direct and Tech Wash are also PFAS-free, making them a more responsible choice for both you and the marine environment.
