Kapok does not absorb water! Therefore, the boat cushions dry quickly. Only the fabric needs to dry.

The fibers contain a bitter substance that is antibacterial and antimicrobial, making it difficult for mold spores, bacteria, and mites to thrive in the kapok.

Ecological and environmentally friendly

Kapok is a 100% organic natural material. Neither chemicals nor artificial fertilizers are used in the production or processing, which is done manually and without waste products.

Comfortable

Kapok fibers are waxy hollow tubes with encapsulated air that provide a super-insulating effect, reflecting body heat in a pleasant way. At the same time, kapok is the world’s lightest natural material—6-8 times lighter than cotton—and is silky smooth and very elastic. Kapok also has great buoyancy and floats—therefore, kapok has also historically been used as a buoyant element in life jackets.

More about Kapok and the tree’s naturally beneficial properties

Kapok is known as a natural silky fiber extracted from Ceiba pentandra, a tree that grows in the tropical rainforests of South and Central America, as well as in India and West Africa. The tree, which can reach an impressive height of 70 meters, is sacred in many cultures.

The first two meters of the tree are covered with sharp thorns, which inspired the Mayans to believe that this sacred tree, which they called the “Tree of God,” was heavenly. They believed that the gods placed the thorns to prevent people from climbing to heaven.

Annually during the dry season, the kapok tree sheds its leaves and then blooms and bears fruit. A kapok tree can produce about 400 seed pods, which corresponds to approximately 2 kg of kapok fiber. The local inhabitants climb up to harvest these pods, after which they extract the delicate fibers. These fibers are then laid out to dry in the sun, and the seeds are separated from the fibers manually or with machines. Dry kapok fibers are then placed in a wind tunnel for sorting, where the finest fibers are separated from the coarser ones by their ability to fly further in the wind tunnel. The finest fibers are then used in the manufacture of the finest boat cushions and other products with high quality requirements.

As an ecological cellulose-based fiber, kapok is unique with its microscopic cavities surrounded by a wax layer. Its chemical structure gives it excellent water-repellent properties. The kapok fiber is naturally resistant to mold and pesticides thanks to its high content of wax, lignin, and bitter substances. Its air-filled structure, which occupies about 80% of the fiber’s volume, makes it the lightest natural fiber—six to eight times lighter than cotton. The high proportion of air also makes kapok fiber extremely breathable and effective for temperature regulation, contributing to a comfortable seating experience.

Kapok fibers are not only thermally efficient but also have a silky surface, which has given them the nickname “gloss wool.” However, the kapok fiber is short and breaks easily, which makes it difficult to weave into fabric without blending it with other fibers. Therefore, kapok is mainly used as filling in products such as the boat cushions from NOCK.

Local communities around the rainforests where kapok grows harvest the fruits by hand and sell them, which is an important source of income.
